Student Learning – Intellectual Development

K-4 Foundational Learning Progressions

The Ministry of Education and Child Care has released updates to the literacy and numeracy progressions, specifically the format and design for both literacy and numeracy.  Newly released are the foundational learning progressions for literacy and numeracy from Kindergarten to grade 4.  These outline what proficiency looks like for both parts of the learning standards in literacy and numeracy.

The Ministry is seeking feedback from classroom teachers. For your information, the links to the progressions are below:.

Classroom Champions:  Intellectual, Human & Social Development

For several years now, many classrooms and schools have partnered with “Classrooom Champions”, an organization focused on student success and mental well-being.  They match up a class with an Olympic athlete, who engages with the students as a mentor throughout the year (virtually) and then visits the class in person, thanks to sponsorship from companies like Pembina and Petronas.

The program responds to the following commitments in the Board Strategic Plan:

  • Promote varied and innovative learning experiences and incorporate practical, hands-on, land-based, and experiential learning applications into the curriculum.
  • Prioritize student mental health and well-being to address the diverse needs of students, including academic, social, and emotional support.
  • Foster a sense of belonging by creating strong relationships between students, staff, families, and community.

The schools that partnered with Classroom Champions this year were:

  1. Upper Pine (new this year)
  2. CM Finch (new this year)
  3. Baldonnel (new this year)
  4. Anne Roberts Young (renewal)
  5. Robert Ogilvie (renewal)
  6. Bert Ambrose (renewal)
  7. Duncan Cran (renewal)
  8. Upper Halfway (renewal)
  9. Wonowon (renewal)
  10. Hudson’s Hope (renewal)

This Spring, there were two special assemblies and visits by the Olympic Champions.

At Baldonnel School on April 4th, Melissa Lotholz, an Olympic bobsled athlete sponsored by Pembina, spent the day with the students in Ms McEachern’s class, culminating in a very dynamic assembly!

At Duncan Cran School on the same day, Olympic speed-skater Brooklyn McDougall sponsored by Petronas, spent the day with the entire school and spoke to them at an assembly as well:

We are very grateful to Classroom Champions for their ongoing support and partnership!

“Take 3”

Bert Bowes Middle School

African Dance Workshop – On February 26, Bert Bowes hosted Ivan Touko, founder and CEO of La Connexional, in Edmonton.

Ivan and La Connexional promote Francophonie, African, and Latinx cultures through dance, music and self-expression.

During our workshop, Ivan shared traditional music and dances.  He also shared his journey from Cameroon to Canada, studying at the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean and being named one of Alberta Council for Global Cooperation’s Top 30 Under 30.

His passion for cultural exchange, self-expression and learning made the workshop an enriching experience for students and staff.

UBC and CPF sponsored this event, including Ivan’s time and travel expenses.

Buick Creek Elementary

Our school was excited to host ‘Science World on the Road’ on the morning of Wednesday, April 2nd.  It was an exciting opportunity for our school to be one of their stops on their FSJ & Region tour.

This year, the presentation was about Fantastic Forces.  The students experienced push, pull, lift, friction, and drag — some of the fantastic forces that affect our lives every day.  They saw amazing demonstrations like the Rubber Chicken Slingshot, the Giant Tablecloth Pull, and perhaps a rocket launch.

Staff and students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and learned a lot from the Science World representative.

Thank you, Science World, for making this possible!!!

Alwin Holland Elementary

The Alwin Holland Student Council members have been working hard doing random acts of kindness in the school and FSJ community.

Here are just some of the organizations they visited to spread some kindness:

Mrs. Lagacé and Mrs. Ross have also worked very hard alongside our student council members in a variety of activities this year to help support our school and local community.
