Student Learning – Intellectual Development

The pictures below represent the work to integrate our early learning programs into the work of intellectual development – including communicating student progress to parents.

Parent Communication on Numeracy Approaches in SD60

Mathematics Assessment and Practice (MAP) is a tool used in classrooms to support understanding of number sense.

The tool below is used as part of a number sense routine in classrooms throughout the school year in grades 4 through 9.

Building Fact Fluency and Numeracy

  • Helping students use the language of mathematics to derive, and memorize multiplication facts with accuracy, confidence and understanding
  • A lot of our young learners struggle with multiplication by seven.  However, if students know facts for two and five they will have a strategy for multiplications by seven.
  • Since 6 x 2 = 12 and,

          6 x 5 = 30 adding together gives us,

          6 x 7 = 42

The Construction Foundation offers hands-on trades exploration workshops delivered by certified tradespeople.  These presentations are free; the Construction Foundation brings in all needed tools and supplies.  After an engaging and empowering session, each student takes home their completed copper bracelet project.  The skills used to make the bracelets are relevant to the sheet metal trade.

Shell Canada Ltd. Donates $20,000 to School District #60 to Support Student Safety Training

November 22nd, 2024

Shell Canada Ltd. has generously donated $20,000 to School District #60 (Peace River North) to support vital safety training for students, equipping them with essential skills and certifications to meet industry requirements.

This funding enables students to participate in Occupational First Aid and H2S Alive training programs, helping break down barriers to employment and paving the way for future success. These certifications not only enhance student safety knowledge but also meet prerequisites for dual credit programs offered at Northern Lights College, bridging the gap between high school and post-secondary education.

“Shell Canada Ltd.’s support helps provide our students with training that is in demand across many industries,” said Stephen Petrucci, Superintendent of School District #60. “This investment ensures our students are prepared to enter the workforce with confidence and the credentials they need to succeed.”

The partnership between Shell Canada Ltd. and School District #60, underscores a shared commitment to fostering opportunities for youth in the region and addressing workforce readiness in local industries.

“Safety is a core value at Shell, and we’re proud to support initiatives that instill this value in young people as they prepare to enter the workforce,” said Vanessa Jocko, Corporate Relations Non-Technical Risk Stakeholder Advisor. “We’re thrilled to partner with School District #60 to help students achieve their goals.”

By reducing financial and logistical barriers to obtaining critical certifications, this initiative creates pathways for students to access education and employment opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach.

Bert Ambrose Elementary

On Thursday, November 28th, the FSJ Fire Department brought and served pizza to the entire Bert Ambrose School Community.

This was to reward and celebrate their outstanding participation in documenting their home fire-safe readiness.  Each year the Fire Department encourages families to take stock of their fire safety plan and ensure all alarms and monitors are functioning properly.

Margaret ‘Ma’ Murray Community School

Our cultural fair was jointly planned by our ELL teachers and our SWIS support teacher.

Students were asked if they would like to participate in a cultural fair to showcase their country of origin.

We have over 100 ELL students from 30 different countries.

Families worked together to prepare their backboards, bring artifacts, cook some traditional foods and then presented them to our school.

We are so excited to share this with other families in our community.
